What Is Sun Awareness Week?

Sun Awareness Week is a campaign which takes place in the first week of May and aims to teach people about health risks they face as a result of sun exposure. The sun’s UV rays can damage human skin and even cause cancer in some more serious cases, which is why it’s extremely important to know exactly how to stay protected when soaking up some vitamin D.

To help you stay protected this summer, we’ve shared some top tips to help you stay aware and stay safe whilst out in the sun.

5 Top Tips For Sun Awareness Week

Sun safety is important all year round, even though the British weather is wildly unpredictable. Even when it doesn’t look sunny, the sun’s rays still penetrate cloudy skies and create UV exposure. Explore these top tips to make sure you stay protected.

Stick To Factor 50

When living in the UK, it can be easy to forget that the sun does actually make an appearance at certain times throughout the year. This doesn’t mean that the sun is any less dangerous and you should use sun cream daily even when it’s cloudy outside.

By sticking to Factor 50 sun cream, you’re giving your skin its best chance at staying protected from sun damage. Evolve Medical recommends Heliocare 360° which protects against UVA, UVB, visible light and infrared-A.

Watch Out For UVA & UVB

There are actually two types of rays from the sun which you need to protect against, these are UVB rays and the less commonly known UVA rays. UVB rays are more commonly thought of as the type of ray that comes from the sun causing you to burn. UVA rays come from artificial light and are around us all the time, for example from your computer screen, TV screens and phone.

“UVA is a much longer ray, it can penetrate down to the layers of your skin where your collagen is being produced, causing premature ageing as well as sun damage. Sun protection that contains both UVA and UVB protection is referred to as broad spectrum sun protection and it is vital to wear this all day, every day, all year round.” – Rachel Green, Nursing Director, at Evolve Medical.

Find A Sun Cream Which Suits You

It’s important to take care when choosing a sun cream and choose one which agrees with your skin type, just as you would when choosing other types of skin products. It’s especially important as you’re applying the product directly to your face, choosing a cream that is too heavy can leave you with angry, congested pores.

“SPF protection that also contains Antioxidant protection is even better still as the antioxidants help to defend the skin cells from damage caused by the sun and will also protect our skin cells DNA.” – Rachel Green, Nursing Director, Evolve Medical.

Make Sure Your Hair Is Protected

It’s important to protect your hair as well as your skin, as the sun’s UV rays can cause damage to the hair’s structure. It’s common for UVA rays to fade colour and UVB rays can cause breakage. The sun also acts as bleach on your hair which is extremely damaging, especially if your hair is already colour treated.

Check Your Skin Regularly

By regularly examining your skin you’re able to catch any issues very early on and get them seen to, just as any abnormalities which are spotted can be treated before becoming more serious. Learn the texture of your skin, look out for the pattern of any moles or freckles so you can refer back to these in the following months and if you spot any changes make an appointment to see your GP.
