How to find structure while housebound.

This month is Stress Awareness month, so with the help from our in-house counsellor Lauren Smith, we have put together a blog post with some of her top tips to help find structure for your days whilst housebound.

  • Set an alarm and aim to get dressed by a certain point each day.
  • Check-in on a loved one, we’re so lucky to live in such a connected world online, there are so many different ways to check in with loved ones, a family skype call or organising a Zoom quiz with your friends or simply just a phone call.
  • Give yourself a limit on how much Netflix you can watch or video games you can play each day.
  • Try to clean one thing each week. (For example the oven, refrigerator, bathroom, windows.)
  • Plan some form of exercise each day – Our very own Chloe Moore Fitness has been running virtual classes via Zoom each day if you are looking for some inspiration, everything from HIIT to Pilates.
  • Find the time to do something that brings you joy. This could be knitting, reading a book, blogging, jewellery making. Do something that you love that sometimes eludes you during day-to-day life.
  • Go easy on yourself!  Let’s be honest, we’re living through a very stressful time right now; We are all trying to adapt to our new ‘normal’ and productivity is going to be at a low for a lot of us right now.

All these steps are small ways you can manage your new daily ‘normal’ and try to not stress about the uncertain times we are living through. Having a daily routine can help to reduce stress, having structure can help us cultivate positive daily habits and prioritise self-care. Creating a routine for yourself can help you alleviate the sometimes overwhelming feeling of what shall I do today. One of the more convenient reasons why structure is important is because it negates the need to regularly schedule your days ahead of time.  You already know what you are doing each and every day. Once you are finished with a task, you already know what is next on your schedule. This structure provides direction in your life, enabling you to act instead of standing still.

Be kind to yourself and others around you, our mental health counsellor Lauren is available on Tuesdays via Skype.
