What Treatments Are Available For Menopause?

Menopause is a natural part of ageing and involves changes to the body that every woman will face. The best way to prepare for menopause is by educating yourself as to what it is and what your symptoms could look like. Many women experience several symptoms of menopause, however, there are treatment options available to help you through this period of your life.

In this blog, we’re looking at the treatments available here at Evolve Medical so that you don’t have to face menopause alone.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is when a woman has not had a period for longer than one year. This biological transition begins when a woman’s ovaries no longer produce eggs which causes hormone levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone to decrease. The age at which menopause can start differs for each individual, though it often occurs around the early 50s for some can start in their 40s.

What Is Perimenopause?

The term perimenopause is used to describe the time during which a woman’s body begins to transition to menopause. During this time, oestrogen levels in the body can rise and fall repeatedly. Once your body has entered this stage, this will mark the beginning of the end of the period in which a woman can have children, due to low progesterone levels which means you will no longer ovulate. As this starts before the full menopause process, some women can notice changes beginning as early as their 30s.

What Are The Symptoms Of Menopause?

The symptoms of menopause and how severe they are can differ from person to person. They typically begin before your periods stop and can last for several years afterwards, although some women can experience this for much longer. There are many recognised symptoms of menopause and while you may not experience all of them, the most common symptoms include:

  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flushes
  • Aches and pains
  • Loss of libido
  • Mood changes
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness

All of these symptoms can have a big impact on almost every aspect of your life and it can be difficult navigating them all at once. We understand the challenges those going through menopause can face and as part of our treatment, we aim to offer as much support as you need.

Seeking Advice For Menopause Treatments

When seeking treatment for menopause at Evolve Medical, your journey will begin with an initial one-hour menopause consultation. This discussion will be centred around getting to know you and your body. What works for others may not work for you, which is why it’s important to outline a treatment path, designed to alleviate and manage symptoms, which is completely personal to you.

Following blood tests, you may be given a prescription to help with the symptoms. This may be a singular course of medication or a repeat prescription, however, this will be fully explained during any meetings with our GP.

Testosterone treatment

If you’re suffering from testosterone deficiency, there are dedicated prescribed treatments available to help combat uncomfortable symptoms, such as fatigue or use of bodily functions. Testosterone replacement therapy will help increase the levels of testosterone in your body and upon successful administration, can significantly reduce the symptoms of testosterone deficiency. This treatment isn’t available on the NHS and will require careful monitoring by a medical specialist throughout the duration of this process.

Lifestyle changes

You don’t always have to seek treatment to deal with the symptoms of menopause as there are some changes to your lifestyle you can make which can have a big impact. This can include things such as eating a healthier diet and ensuring you get a healthy amount of exposure to sunlight. Also taking vitamin supplements will help ensure that your body has the necessary ingredients to maintain your good health.

How Much Does A Menopause Consultation Cost?

Initially, the hour-long consultation will be £195, while the follow-up blood tests can be between £40 – £400. The initial consultation will include the cost of any prescription needed. Repeat prescriptions are £20 each. Should you undergo Testosterone Treatment, costs will be discussed during a consultation appointment for this procedure.
