With summer holidays just around the corner it is very important to protect your skin from the harmful suns rays. Skincare in the sun is an absolute priority.
Sunscreens are important skincare products used to prevent sunburn, photoaging and skin cancer.
Until recently it was believed that sun damage could be prevented by blocking the UVB rays and SPF was developed to measure a sunscreens ability to block UVB rays. Now we know that UVA rays also contribute significantly to skin damage. To be protected from both UVB and UVA you need to look for a broad spectrum protection.
What does SPF stand for? SPF stands for sun protection factor and tells you how effectively a sunscreen will protect you from UV rays.
The SPF rating tells you that whilst wearing that sunscreen how long you can stay in the sun without burning, compared to how long you could stay in the sun without burning with no sunscreen on.
e.g. If you normally burn after 15 minutes in the sun without sunscreen, if you apply SPF 10 that means you can stay in the sun 10 times longer without burning or 2.5 hours.
SPF only measures UVB and does not protect from UVA rays, which age the skin and contribute to skin cancer.
SELECT THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN
Select a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB as they protect against the full spectrum of UVA rays.
LOTION UP OFTEN
Reapply the sunscreen at least every 2 hours- sooner if you swim as water can remove it from the skin. Exercise can also remove it due to sweating.
DO NOT SKIMP
Make sure you cover your skin liberally using at least 1 ounce on every application.
