What is PRP and what are the benefits?
PRP is an autologous treatment (no concerns over transmissible diseases or immune responses). Also known as the Vampire Facelift. PRP therapy is plasma rich platelet therapy. The patients’ own plasma is injected into the skin resulting in a cell reaction which stimulates collagen and elastin giving a more youthful appearance. PRP increased type 1 collagen, growth factor and increases skin fibroblast activity. This causes the skin to be plumper, reduction of wrinkles and allows for a natural rejuvenation. Furthermore, PRP may be used in sensitive areas, such as the fine skin around the eyes which are not suited for other treatments. PRP may be combined with other treatments to stimulate biological effect.
How is PRP carried out?
A sample of your blood is taken. The blood is ‘spun’ in a centrifuge in order to separate the PRP from the other components of your blood. The PRP is drawn into syringes and injected into the area requiring treatment.
What will happen at my appointment?
We book an hour for your treatment. You will be asked to complete a thorough medical questionnaire and sign a consent form. A sample of blood will be taken from a vein in your arm, our nurses are highly skilled in venepuncture to ensure your comfort. The sample is collected in a special tube containing a separation gel. The blood is then placed in the centrifuge and spun to separate the PRP. This takes 10 minutes. At this point we will apply a local anaesthetic cream to the area we are treating. We will also take some close-up photographs so we can compare the results at a review appointment.
Once the sample is complete and separated it is drawn into syringes. The PRP will then be injected into the area being treated. Only a very tiny amount of PRP is injected into each site – this means the treatment requires multiple injections to be effective.
How will I look afterwards?
The treated area may look ‘bumpy’ where the injections have been given. This will start to go down within the hour but may still be noticeable for 24 hours. Use of skin products and makeup should be avoided in the first 24 hours.
When will I see results and what are the benefits?
Results take 3-4 weeks to start to show. Improvement continues beyond this time. Injection of PRP to the treated site activates platelets, causing them to release regeneration associated growth factors, which initiate a healing response by attracting stem cells, stimulating cell growth, tissue remodelling and de-novo collagen deposit. The process leads to a slowdown of the aging process, improvement of skin texture and tone, diminishing fine lines, wrinkles and scars and gradual increase in skin thickness and vitality. Importantly, the skin will maintain a natural looking appearance after treatment.
When do I re-treat?
We recommend a course of 3 treatments at monthly intervals. Following this, a yearly booster treatment is advisable.
