What is Milia and what are the options for Milia treatment?
A milium cyst is small, white bump that typically appears on the nose and cheeks. These cysts are often found in groups, and in these cases are called milia. The cysts occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. In children, milia often disappear within two to four weeks. For adults, they can be removed by a skin care specialist.
Do not despair, there are a few treatment options available.
The Milia will be pierced with a sterile needle and squeezed out! This may not be an option for Milia which are close to the eyes. We always carry out a consultation first and at that time the safest options will be discussed with you.
CryoPen™ is an advanced treatment that is a fast, effective, safe and a new solution for removal of skin imperfections such as skin tags, milia and age spots. Treatment takes from 5 to 30 seconds, so you can be in and out quickly. The CryoPen™ emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure. This allows our practitioners to work with millimetre precision. It destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, which ruptures the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there should be no damage to any healthy tissue. It’s incredibly accurate.
This procedure may be helpful for smaller Milia. A course of treatments will usually be needed to get on top of the problem. Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. The removal of the dead skin cells reveals the softer more youthful looking skin cells underneath.
Medical Skin Peels.
We use the Obagi Blue Radiance Peel. This is an excellent peel with the ingredient salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble ingredient. It will penetrate deep into your pores to really clean them out and improve your overall complexion. A course of peels will usually be needed to get to the bottom of the problem.
We recommend both the Neostrata and the Obagi range of products. Our Nurses are fully trained prescribers and following on from your consultation can order the necessary Prescription Only treatments for you. Management with our recommended products is an effective way to both treat and prevent Milia.
So as you can see there are lots of options. As with all our treatments the consultation is free of charge Please give us a call if you would like more info or to book an appointment.
