Dermaplaning FactFile: What to Expect

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective exfoliation treatment that will leave the complexion smooth, soft and instantly brighter. It involves the use of a surgical blade to gently scrape the surface of the skin using light, feathery strokes but the treatment is safe and painless. The rough, dulling surface skin cells are removed and the fine vellus hair is banished leaving the skin soft fresh and glowing.

Treatment time is around 30 minutes.

What are the benefits?

Over time we all build up dead skin cells on our faces which result in clogged up pores and dull, tired skin. Dermaplaning helps skincare products penetrate the skin and creates a flawless base for make up to glide on smoothly. Besides that, it helps minimize acne scarring and uneven skin tone. Dermaplaning exfoliates to a much deeper level yet doesn’t require any harsh abrasives.

What will happen at my appointment?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation method that uses a surgical scalpel blade to gently scrape the surface layer off the skin.

The highly trained therapist uses the scalpel to effectively scrape away the top layers of the skin. Skin is cleansed prior to treatment. The skin is held taut during the process so there is no risk of damage from the blade. The process takes around 45 minutes. A hydrating mask can also be applied following treatment to boost the results. LED Light therapy can also be used to enhance the results.

The surface layer usually has dead skin cells, dirt and other particles preventing you from enjoying glowing skin. Once the treatment is completed the skin is immediately smoother, brighter and fuzz free.

Will the hair grow back thicker after treatment?

Dermaplaning does not result in thicker hair.  There are two types of hair: vellus (fuzzy) and terminal hair. Vellus hair, when removed, will grow back to the same size and shape.  The coarse hair is called terminal hair and will remain coarse when it grows back.  Dermaplaning will remove both vellus and terminal hair but will not change the hair texture or thickness.

Are there any side effects?

The skin may be slightly pink for a few days after treatment and light flaking is to be expected.

Dermaplaning helps skin care products penetrate the skin and creates a flawless base for make up to glide on smoothly. It helps minimise acne scarring and uneven skin tone.
Pregnant ladies like this treatment as it uses no harsh chemicals so is completely safe for mother and baby.
At Evolve Medical in Farsley we recommend a treatment every 4 weeks to obtain and maintain maximum results, however a one off treatment will still give an instant boost.
